Filing Season At-A-Glance

As we wrap up another income tax filing season, we’re looking at the numbers we’ve recorded so far. Just over 3.3 million returns have been filed, and 2.1 million refunds have been issued. The contact center received approximately 125,000 calls.

Make Payments with MassTaxConnect

We want to remind you that the fastest way to pay is online with MassTaxConnect. Payments can be made at any time, whether or not you have an account on MassTaxConnect. We have a YouTube tutorial to guide you through the process. If you can’t pay your personal income tax obligation in full, pay as much as you can and consider setting up a payment agreement.

On the Horizon: Extension Deadline

If you received an extension to file a personal income or fiduciary tax return this season, the date to get those returns filed is October 15, 2025. Reminder: an extension only grants you additional time to file, not to pay. Any amount due and unpaid by April 15 will incur interest, even if a valid extension is on file.

Stay Alert – Mail Scams on the Rise

Staying vigilant during and after the tax filing season can save you and your clients time and unnecessary stress. States nationwide are warning taxpayers about fraudulent tax notices claiming taxpayers owe money. When in doubt, contact DOR directly to verify if a letter you received is authentic. If you suspect you are a victim of fraud, contact the ID Theft Unit at (617) 887-6350.
