Plan Ahead - MassTaxConnect will be temporarily unavailable

Friendly reminder that MassTaxConnect will be unavailable for scheduled maintenance from Friday, October 21, 2022, at 11:00 PM, until Monday, October 24, at 6:00 AM, including for all payment methods. Share this with your network and clients.

Deadline ahead - HIRD filing begins soon

Here’s an annual reminder that the Health Insurance Responsibility Disclosure (HIRD) filing period, for employers to report on employer-sponsored insurance, will soon begin. The filing period runs from November 15 through December 15. To learn more about HIRD, visit the FAQ page on our website.

Renew 2021 small business energy exemption certificates

Small businesses that registered for an energy exemption certificate in 2021 will need to renew those certificates by December 31, 2022. The renewal option will be available through MassTaxConnect as of November 1, 2022. Take a look at the information page for instructions on how to renew.

An exemption from collecting room occupancy excise tax and fees must be claimed

If you project that an individual property will be rented for 14 days or less in a calendar year, either by you as an owner or through an intermediary such as an online service or a real estate agent, you must claim the 14-day exemption. There’s no need to collect taxes or excise on the rental if it’s rented for 14 days or less. If you’re filing for a 14-day exemption for the first time or renewing one, it can be done through MassTaxConnect.  The exemption process must be completed no later than January 15 to be effective for the 2023 calendar year. The information page has instructions for the renewal process.

Voluntary Disclosure Program available for taxpayers

Taxpayers who want to voluntarily come forward and report unpaid Massachusetts tax liabilities, should visit MassTaxConnect and participate in the Voluntary Disclosure Program. It’s a user-friendly and informal process. Corporations are required to complete the Massachusetts Activity Questionnaire as part of the process. You’ll find more information on the Voluntary Disclosure page.

Communicate in 20 languages with DOR

In our continuous effort to bridge the language gap between taxpayers and our agency, DOR recently partnered with a group to provide simultaneous, over-the-phone interpreting services to taxpayers. With this partnership, the agency and customers have access to interpreters for 20 languages now and will expand to up to 200 eventually.
