Finding Adult Providers

When it’s time to switch from pediatric to adult care, it’s important to find your adult doctors early. You should begin seeing an adult provider around age 18 to 23.

If possible, schedule your first appointment and ask your new provider what medical records they may need while you are still seeing your old providers, in case there are questions about your care or you need to have medical records sent to the new office.

How to find an adult provider

  • Ask your current doctor or other healthcare providers for a referral
  • Consider a trusted family member or friend’s doctor
  • If you have a managed care plan, call your plan or visit this webpage
  • If you don’t have a managed care plan, check out the MassHealth PCP directory

It’s important to find a doctor who makes you feel comfortable and can meet your needs. Before you choose your new doctor, call their office and ask to speak with a staff member who has time to answer your questions, or make an appointment to meet the doctor and staff in person.

Ask the office staff or the doctor:

  • Does the doctor accept your insurance coverage? Are they taking new patients?
  • Is the office accessible to people with any disabilities you may have?
  • Will the office be able to meet your health needs? For instance, do they have behavioral health resources, or specialists on staff? If not, can they give you any referrals you need for other care?
  • Is the doctor willing to discuss your health history and any special needs with your pediatric doctor?
  • If you have any health conditions, do they currently see patients with similar conditions?
  • If they recommend care at a hospital, what hospital(s) will they work with?
  • Are they also an expert in any specific types of medicine, with specific communities (like the LGBTQIA+ community), or do they speak specific languages?

Ask yourself:

  • Does the doctor listen to your questions or do they interrupt you?
  • Can they explain information so that you can understand it?
  • Do they take enough time to answer your questions?
  • Do they treat you with respect?
