Forest Lake (Palmer)

Description

Forest Lake is a 48-acre great pond located off of River St in Palmer. Forest Lake has an average depth of 11 feet, a maximum depth of 26 feet and the waters are typically transparent to 10 feet. The bottom consists of gravel and mud and aquatic vegetation is common along the shoreline and thickest in the southern portions of the pond. The southern and western shores are lightly developed with houses while the eastern shore falls within the Forest Lake Wildlife Management Area and is undeveloped.

Recreational access

MassWildlife manages a paved boat ramp suitable for trailered craft off of River St. on the northeast corner of the lake (get directions). Parking for approximately 20 cars is available at the ramp and along  and shore fishing is possible along the eastern shore within the Forest Lake Wildlife Management Area. There is a 10 horse power motor limit. Please contact the Connecticut Valley District Offices of MassWildlife for additional information and/or restrictions pertaining to public access of Forest Lake.

Fish populations

The following fish species were found during MassWildlife surveys:

  • largemouth bass
  • chain pickerel
  • yellow perch
  • black crappie
  • pumpkinseed
  • bluegill
  • brown bullhead
  • yellow bullhead
  • golden shiner
  • American eel

Forest Lake is stocked each spring and fall with trout. 

Fishing

Forest Lake is a popular trout fishing destination during spring and fall. Less is know regarding warm water populations however largemouth bass and chain pickerel in excess of 5lb have been reported. Forest Lake has produced largemouth bass, chain pickerel, white perch, black crappie, bullhead, brown trout, brook trout and tiger trout that meet minimum sizes for recognition by the Freshwater Sportfishing Awards Programs
