MassWildlife's Hooks and Books program is a new partnership with public libraries across the Commonwealth that provides free access to fishing equipment for local communities. Through this innovative program, participating libraries will offer rod-and-reel kits available for loan—just like borrowing a book—making it easier than ever for people of all ages and backgrounds to try fishing without purchasing gear.
How to loan fishing equipment
An example of the Lee Library's fishing loaner kit display.
If your local library is participating in Hooks and Books, you can rent our equipment! Each fishing loaner kit includes:
- A spin-caster rod and reel
- Small tackle box
- An informational packet including how to access online fishing tips, find local places to fish, and get information on fishing regulations and licensing.
MassWildlife provides up to 10 fishing kits per partnering library, depending on the library's needs and space. MassWildlife arranges for pick-up and drop-off of equipment, equipment maintenance and replacement, and outreach.
Where to borrow equipment
Participating libraries for 2026 include:
- Ashfield
- Boston (Central in Copley Square, Connolly, East Boston, Faneuil, Grove Hall, Honan-Allston, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, South Boston, Uphams Corner)

Don't see your local library on our list? You can still join MassWildlife at one of many free fishing clinics offered throughout the summer. These beginner-friendly events provide hands-on instruction, equipment, and guidance from experienced staff, making them a great way to learn the basics and build confidence on the water.
Want to bring Hooks & Books to your library?
We are at capacity for 2026! If your library would like to join Hooks & Books next year, please fill out this form.
To participate, libraries need a process for community members to check out the loaner kits and must provide MassWildlife the total number of borrowers who use the equipment throughout the season. Libraries will also be asked to designate one contact person who can notify us when equipment needs maintenance or replacement.
