How to tell if someone is struggling with their mental health

You don't need to be an expert to support someone in a time of need.

What should I look out for?

Some days are heavier than others, but some long-lasting changes can be a sign that something more is going on. Look for differences in:

  • Sleep or appetite
  • Mood or irritability
  • Lack of interest or pleasure in things previously enjoyed
  • Fatigue or sustained difficulty concentrating
  • Unexplained physical symptoms
  • Actively or passively talking about wanting to die
    • Ask “Are you thinking of hurting yourself?” and do NOT leave them alone if the answer is yes. Call 988.

Something is wrong, what should I do next?

No matter how you choose to help someone in need, remember to care for yourself as well. Your consistent support can be a valuable tool in someone's recovery, but it's important to make sure you set boundaries and focus on your own well-being too.
