Description
Lake Massapoag is a 392-acre great pond located about a mile south of Route 27 in Sharon. Lake Massapoag has an average depth of 16 feet, a maximum depth of 48 feet, and waters typically transparent to roughly 10 feet. The bottom is primarily gravel and rubble with several boulder strewn areas, some of which are close to the surface but typically marked with a buoy. Aquatic vegetation is infrequent and largely limited to coves on the southern and western shores. The shoreline is heavily developed with houses that, combined with its location close to population centers and aesthetic appeal, make Lake Massapoag a popular destination during the summer months.
Recreational access
The Town of Sharon manages a large concrete boat ramp and adjacent parking area at Memorial Park off of Pond St. on the northern shore of the pond (get directions). Parking at the ramp requires a town issued sticker. If you do not have a sticker, drop your boat and find parking at the high school across the street from the ramp. Shore and cartop boat access is also possible at the southern end of the lake on town land off of Community Center Drive; parking fees may apply (get directions). Fish populations
The following fish species were found during MassWildlife surveys:
- largemouth bass
- smallmouth bass
- chain pickerel
- yellow perch
- white perch
- black crappie
- bluegill
- pumpkinseed
- American eel
Lake Massapoag is also stocked each spring with trout.
Fishing
Lake Massapoag is a great lake for largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing. Focus your efforts on any boulder strewn areas of the lake as these fish often associate with submerged cover and structure. Yellow and white perch can also be caught in association with bass near structure but also occasionally along the shoreline as well. Chain pickerel can be found within the weedier parts of the pond and in the coves. Lake Massapoag has produced largemouth bass, chain pickerel, bullhead, black crappie, sunfish, white sucker, and yellow perch that meet minimum sizes for recognition by the Freshwater Sportfishing Awards Program.
