Leading by Example Recognition Awards

The LBE Awards recognize outstanding efforts among Commonwealth agencies, public colleges and universities, and municipalities that have implemented policies and programs that have led to significant and measurable environmental and energy benefits.

Nominations for the LBE Awards are currently closed. Look for a chance to nominate individuals, municipalities, and state entities at a later date.

Award Categories and Eligibility

Leading by Example Award Categories

There are six (6) award winners selected for recognition each year, divided among three categories:

  • Two (2) awards for the Public Entity category
  • Two (2) awards for the Municipality category
  • Two (2) awards for the Individual category

Eligible Entities for Nomination 

  • MA Public Entities: State agencies, authorities, public colleges and universities, and/or their individual departments or facilities
  • MA Municipal Entities: Municipalities and/or individual municipal departments, municipal or regional public schools, public school districts, regional planning commissions or other regional public entities working with municipalities, and public purchasing cooperatives.
  • MA Individuals: Individuals employed by or volunteering for any of the above eligible entities

2024 LBE Awards Recipients

The 2024 LBE Awards ceremony was held at the State House on Thursday, January 30, 2025. Awards were presented to:

  • Office of Vehicle Management (OVM)
  • Massachusetts State Police (MSP)
  • City of Malden
  • Town of Warwick
  • Tara Gallagher, Sustainability and EH&S Coordinator, Salem State University
  • Katherine Moses, Sustainability Director, City of Lowell
