Leading by Example Recognition Awards

The LBE Awards recognize outstanding efforts among Commonwealth agencies, public colleges and universities, and municipalities that have implemented policies and programs that have led to significant and measurable environmental and energy benefits.

Eligibility

Up to eight (8) award winners are selected for recognition every year, divided among two categories. Six (6) awards are presented in the Public Entity category and two (2) are awarded in the Individual category.

Public Entity Awards:

  • MA State Entities: State agencies, authorities, public colleges and universities, and/or their individual departments or facilities
  • MA Municipal Entities: Municipalities and/or individual municipal departments, municipal or regional public schools, public school districts, regional planning commissions or other regional public entities working with municipalities, and public purchasing cooperatives.

Individual Awards:

  • Individuals employed by or volunteering for any of the above eligible entities

2022 LBE Awards Nomination Process

The 2022 Leading by Example Recognition Awards will be held in December at the State House (date and time TBD). The nomination process and relevant application forms are outlined below.

Individual Category

Individual awards will be presented to up to one state government employee or volunteer and up to one municipal employee or volunteer

Public Entity Category

Public Entity awards will be presented to up to two state agencies, up to two public colleges/universities, and up to two municipalities. Nominations will be accepted in two phases.

Phase 1: Express Interest Form (Optional)

State entities and municipalities interested in applying for a 2022 LBE Award are highly encouraged to complete an Express Interest Form. After review by DOER Staff, strong candidates will be encouraged to submit a full Nomination Form (Phase 2). 

The Phase 1 Express Interest Form can be found here. Nominations must be submitted by COB September 9th, 2022.

Phase 2: Full LBE Award Nomination Form

LBE staff will review submissions from Phase 1 and encourage strong candidates to complete Phase 2. However, state entities and municipalities may complete a Full LBE Award Nomination Form at any time, with or without completion of a Phase 1 Express Interest Form.

Award Recipients: 2021

The 2021 LBE Award ceremony was held at UMass Lowell on Thursday, December 9th, 2021. The event highlighted efforts of public entities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote sustainability efforts, and educate and engage the public in such initiatives. Awards were presented to:

  • Campus Decarbonization Teams of Salem State University, UMass Amherst, UMass Dartmouth, and UMass Lowell
  • Bridgewater State University
  • Board of Library Commissioners Public Library Construction Program
  • DCR's Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
  • City of Greenfield
  • Town of Acton
  • Ed Vitone, Town of Ashburnham
  • Sean Donaghy, MBTA
