Description
Long Pond is a 52-acre impoundment of an unnamed tributary to Sandy Pond located adjacent to a suburban neighborhood in the north eastern corner of Ayer. Only small portions of the southern shore are developed with houses with the remaining portions to the north being forested. A shallower basin lies to the north in Groton, is surrounded by conservation land and may be connected to Long Pond proper during periods of higher water. However, This basin may be more of a wetland during other parts of the year.
Recreational access
The Pond View Association maintains a fishing dock, unimproved dirt cartop boat launch and paved parking area suitable for ten cars off of Orchid Lane in a suburban neighborhood of Ayer (get directions). From the parking area, it is a short walk downhill to the fishing dock and launch which is to the right of the dock. Shore fishing is limited to the dock and launch on this small public parcel of land.
Park here along Orchid Lane where the shoulder of the road has been enlarged.
Shore fishing is best at this small dock over looking the water.
This unimproved dirt launch is to the right of the fishing dock and suitable for cartop boats.
Fish populations
The following fish species were found during MassWildlife surveys:
- largemouth bass
- chain pickerel
- yellow perch
- brown bullhead
- yellow bullhead
- bluegill
- golden shiner
Fishing
Shore fishing from the dock is probably best for sunfish as it seemed that the water was pretty shallow within casting distance. If you have access to a boat you can get to deeper area to the east and likely larger fish. Not much is know regarding fishing opportunities here.
