Manage Your Business Entity License
Important Note: The Division of Insurance does not maintain ownership information for business entities. We do not track or update Owners, Partners Officers, or Directors.
Important Renewal Information
Business Entity Licenses must be renewed through NIPR before the license expiration date. Massachusetts does not provide a grace period for late Business Entity License renewals.
If your Business Entity License expires before it is renewed, you cannot submit a renewal application. Instead, you must submit a new initial Business Entity License application through NIPR.
Understanding Members and DRLPs
A Business Entity Producer must designate at least one Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP). The DRLP is responsible for ensuring the business entity complies with Massachusetts insurance laws and regulations.
- Every DRLP is automatically listed as an affiliated member.
- A DRLP does not need to be an owner, partner, officer, or director.
- All affiliated members must hold Massachusetts producer licenses, regardless of residency.
Line of Authority Requirements
Massachusetts requires that a business entity must maintain at least one affiliated member licensed for each line of insurance offered by the business.
This requirement may be met by:
- One affiliated member (often the DRLP) holding all required lines of authority, or
- Multiple affiliated members collectively holding the required lines of authority
- Multiple DRLPs may be designated if desired. This helps to avoid the entity license becoming inactive in the event of a DRLP licensure lapse.
Add or Remove a Member or DRLP
DRLP changes must be submitted through NIPR. Please note that business entities with multiple resident licenses will have to submit their request with paper check mailed to our office. If a check is received and no multiple resident licenses are found, the check will be returned.
- Visit NIPR.com
- Select Apply for a New License
- Select Resident or Non-Resident
- Select Business Entity

Do not select new lines of authority unless you intend to modify your license. Current members can be viewed on State Based Systems.
Business Names and DBA Names
All Business Entity names must be approved by the Division of Insurance before applying for a license. Names must be professional in nature and cannot duplicate the name of another licensed entity. Business Entities may have one approved DBA (Doing Business As) name.
Request Name or DBA Approval
To request name approval or submit a DBA for approval, email: DOINameApproval@mass.gov
After receiving name approval from the Division of Insurance, a DBA must be registered with the city or town where business will be conducted before it can be added to a license record. Non-resident agencies may register a DBA with the City of Boston. After obtaining the Business Certificate, submit a copy to DOINameApproval@mass.gov to have the DBA added to your license record.
Change a Business Entity Name
Business entities must obtain Division approval before changing the business name on their Massachusetts license.
- Step 1: Request name approval from the Division of Insurance by emailing: DOINameApproval@mass.gov
- Step 2: Update your business name with the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth.
- Step 3: Submit an updated Certificate of Good Standing showing the new business name to: DOINameApproval@mass.gov. The Division will update your license after the documentation is reviewed.
