Unlike an internship, registered apprenticeship is an employment and training model designed to build long-term talent. Employers can develop programs around the specific skills, occupations, and workforce needs of their business.

Getting started
Registered apprenticeship can be used across a wide range of industries and occupations, from healthcare and manufacturing to information technology and finance. More than 1,000 occupations are recognized as apprenticeship eligible by the U.S. Department of Labor.
The Division of Apprentice Standards (DAS) provides technical assistance to help you determine whether registered apprenticeship is right for your organization and guide you through developing and registering a program in Massachusetts.
Follow the steps below to get started.

Attend an information session
Start by attending an online information session for a general introduction to registered apprenticeship or pre-apprenticeship. You’ll learn about the apprenticeship model, basic program requirements, and the process for developing a program in Massachusetts.

Get connected with an Apprenticeship Liaison team
Next, submit an employer interest form to connect one-on-one with an Apprenticeship Liaison. Your liaison will discuss your organization’s specific workforce and training needs and help you explore how registered apprenticeship could work for your business, including potential occupations and program options.
Funding for registered apprenticeship
Massachusetts offers funding opportunities to help employers and Registered Apprenticeship Sponsors develop, grow, and expand apprenticeship programs. Depending on the funding opportunity and eligibility requirements, resources may be available to support program development, apprentice training, recruitment, and other costs associated with expanding registered apprenticeship.
Manage your registered apprenticeship program
Once your program is registered and operating, you are officially a Massachusetts Registered Apprenticeship Sponsor. As a sponsor, you are responsible for managing your program through the Massachusetts Apprenticeship Portal, meeting state and federal requirements, and maintaining your program’s registered status.
DAS provides ongoing technical assistance to help you manage your program, meet reporting and compliance requirements, and maintain your program’s registered status.
