MassDOT Research and Materials Section (RMS): Research and Evaluation

The Research and Evaluation Unit provides statewide technical guidance, support, and leadership for MassDOT and the construction industry through field investigations, applied research, specification development, training, and continual evaluation of emerging materials, technologies, and construction practices.

Concrete Mix Design Evaluation

The Research and Evaluation unit is responsible for the review and approval of more than 1,000 concrete mix design formulations annually.  This includes oversight of the Qualified Construction Materials Lists (QCMLs) for approved concrete mix designs and related materials.

Research

The Research and Evaluation unit serves as project champion for research projects, conducts independent research, and partners on research projects with various academic institutions. Research findings contribute to the development of standards and best practices, and ensure that MassDOT policies and specifications reflect current research, proven performance, and industry advancements.

Aggregate Source Licensing

The Research and Evaluation unit oversees the administration of 700 CMR 19.00 – Aggregate Source Licensing for the Production of Cement Concrete. In coordination with the Massachusetts State Geologist, the unit reviews license applications and maintains aggregate sampling and testing criteria.
