Description
North Pond is an 18-acre great pond located off of North Florida Road entirely within Savoy Mountain State Forest. North Pond has an average depth of 13 feet, a maximum depth of 28 feet, and clear waters with excellent transparency. The bottom is composed primarily of muck with some scattered areas of gravel and there is little aquatic vegetation. The shoreline is undeveloped except for a state beach and picnic area.
Recreational access
The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) manages a dirt boat ramp suitable for cartop watercraft on the northern tip of the pond (get directions). No motors are allowed. The entire shoreline is accessible and open to shore fishing as it falls within Savoy Mountain State Forest. Please contact the DCR offices of Savoy Mountain State Forest for additional information, fee structure, and/or restrictions pertaining to public access of North Pond.
Fish populations
The following fish species were found during MassWildlife surveys:
- bluegill
- pumpkinseed
- brown bullhead
- golden shiner
North Pond is stocked each spring and fall with trout.
Fishing
Stocked fish comprise the bulk of the fishery in North Pond. Combined with its remote setting and undeveloped shores, fishing on North Pond is a relaxing activity. North Pond has produced brook trout that meet minimum size requirements for recognition by the Freshwater Sportfishing Awards Program.
