Oxygen and respiratory therapy equipment for MassHealth members

Oxygen and respiratory therapy equipment (OXY) and supplies used in the administration of oxygen therapy or the administration of respiratory therapy.

Where do I start?

Your medical provider may recommend or order oxygen and respiratory therapy equipment for you. They can contact an OXY provider, or they can give you a prescription and you can contact an OXY provider of your choice.

The OXY provider needs a signed prescription for the purchase or rental of OXY.  In some cases, an OXY provider might need to follow up with your medical provider to get a corrected or more complete document.

Prior authorization

Most oxygen and respiratory equipment requires prior authorization (PA). This means MassHealth will determine if the item is medically necessary.

The OXY provider will let you know if a PA is needed. If MassHealth denies your PA, we’ll send you a letter of denial at the address we have on file for you. The letter will include instructions for how to appeal the decision.

Delivery of OXY

The OXY provider will coordinate delivery of OXY orders after they get all needed documentation or PA for the item.

Repair or replacement of OXY

Contact your OXY provider if you need repairs for any equipment that MassHealth covers for you. MassHealth covers replacement OXY when the device or system in use no longer meets your medical needs, or if repairs cost more than replacing the item.
