PFAS Identification Questionnaires for Industry

Learn more about how OTA can help you find sources of PFAS in your industrial facility using industry-specific questionnaires

Whether because of environmental regulations, consumer demand, or their own environmental goals, more and more companies are seeking to reduce or eliminate PFAS in their operations. But sources of PFAS are not always obvious, and companies are not always sure where to look. OTA has developed surveys about different products and raw materials that often contain PFAS, as well as processes where products containing PFAS are commonly used. Our goal is to help companies identify PFAS sources in their own operations so that they will be better equipped to reduce or eliminate it.

Why participate?

We've heard from many Massachusetts businesses that are struggling to figure out whether their facilities contain any PFAS. Some are trying to figure out whether they're subject to PFAS reporting requirements. Some suspect there may be legacy contamination from prior use. Some have even found it in their effluent, and don't know where it's coming from. PFAS is used for a wide variety of applications, and its sources aren't always obvious. OTA's questionnaires are designed to hone in on the likeliest sources in your facility, allowing you to focus your PFAS source reduction efforts most efficiently.

By going through this process of discovery with an OTA staffer, you'll also help contribute to the body of knowledge about specific industrial uses of PFAS. Companies who participate in these surveys can also choose to allow OTA to add the names of products they tell us about to lists of PFAS-containing and PFAS-free products. These product lists are being created for the greater good of helping facilities that are trying to avoid PFAS, and to highlight applications where safer alternatives are still needed. (Companies can still choose to participate in these surveys even if they don’t wish to contribute to these lists.)

How it works

Your OTA technical assistance provider will provide you with a copy of the questions ahead of time, which you can review and use to consult with colleagues (you can also download the survey for your industry at the bottom of this page).

OTA will also produce a unique, confidential web link specific to your facility, which will be used to complete the questionnaire. Like all of OTA’s work, these questionnaires are completely confidential.

Participating companies will meet with a member of OTA’s technical staff to walk through the questionnaire question by question and discuss any questions you might have.

After you complete the survey, your OTA contact will flag likely sources of PFAS so that your company can target its toxics use reduction efforts.
