About the Working Groups
In 2024 MassDOT was awarded the “Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods Grant” (RCN). The federal grant of $335.4 million was to be used to advance the design and construction of the project. This meant that critical design decisions had to be made to meet permitting deadlines.
From 2024 and into 2025, MassDOT convened four Working Groups to focus on four critical elements of the project’s design:
- Throat Area/ Charles River
- Multimodal Local Street Network
- Multimodal Local Connections
- Rail and Transit
The purpose of the Working Groups was to hold regular, frequent meetings focused on design tasks and decision points. The project team gathered and analyzed their feedback, incorporating elements into designs. The goal of the Working Group was to prioritize design alternatives to meet permit and grant deadlines by September 2026.
Each Working Group included:
- A Chair and Co-Chair from a Deciding Party affiliate
- Partnering Parties, such as a permitting authority or a property owner
- 10 Core Group Representatives from appropriate issue areas
