Overview
The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) was passed into law in 2003 with the goal of eliminating sexual violence in correctional facilities.
If a state is not in full compliance with PREA, the US Department of Justice reallocates 5% of funding awarded to that state through the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) to be used for purposes aligned with PREA. As the State Administering Agency (SAA) for JAG funding awarded to Massachusetts, OGR also manages the PREA reallocation.
