Public Insurance Adjuster - Individual & Corporate
Individual Public Insurance Adjuster License
To qualify for a Public Insurance Adjuster license, you must:
- Be at least 21 years old.
- Be trustworthy and competent.
- Have not had an insurance license revoked or suspended.
- Have at least two years of experience adjusting property loss claims or related work.
- Resident and Non-Residents must pass the required Massachusetts Public Insurance Adjuster examination.
Qualifying experience may include:
- Working for a public, company, or independent adjuster
- Construction, building restoration, or estimating work related to property losses
- Insurance claims handling, estimating, negotiation, or property damage assessment
How to Get Licensed
- Step 1: Pass the required Massachusetts Public Insurance Adjuster examination. Both resident and non-resident applicants must pass the examination.
- Step 2: Submit your application through NIPR and upload all required documents to the NIPR Attachments Warehouse.
- MA Public Insurance Adjuster Exam passing score report
- Written contract (sample contract available here )
- Passport-style photo
- Letter verifying at least two years of adjusting experience
- A Massachusetts CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) Background Check Report
Note: If your application requires supporting documentation, , proof of U.S. citizenship, or documents related to "Yes" responses to background questions (including a signed explanation and any final court or administrative records), please upload the required documents to the NIPR Attachment Warehouse when you apply. If you have already applied without uploading them, please submit the documents as soon as possible and email producerupdate.mailbox@mass.gov after uploading, as the Division is not automatically notified when documents are added to the NIPR Attachment Warehouse.
Applications will not be reviewed until all required documents have been received.
Continuing Education
Public Insurance Adjusters must complete continuing education (CE) to maintain an active license.
Required CE Credits: 15 hours of approved Public Insurance Adjuster continuing education during each licensing period
- Public Insurance Adjuster licenses renew every 3 years.
- CE requirements must be completed before renewal.
- There is no reinstatement period for incomplete CE.
- Public Insurance Adjusters are not required to complete Massachusetts Approved Ethics (MAE) training.
- Public Insurance Adjusters only receive credit for approved Public Insurance Adjuster courses. Producer CE courses do not count toward Public Insurance Adjuster CE requirements.
Business Entity Public Insurance Adjuster License
Businesses that provide public adjusting services must hold a Business Entity Public Insurance Adjuster License. Before applying, the business entity must complete the Massachusetts Business Entity licensing process.Learn about Business Entity Licensing Requirements.
License-Specific Requirements
- At least one affiliated member must hold an active Massachusetts Public Insurance Adjuster license.
- A written adjusting contract must be uploaded through the NIPR Attachments Warehouse.
- The business entity must meet all Massachusetts Business Entity licensing requirements.
