Reinsurance Intermediary Brokers act as intermediaries between insurers and reinsurers. They help insurers obtain reinsurance coverage and negotiate reinsurance transactions. Massachusetts does not allow exemptions from Reinsurance Intermediary Broker licensing requirements. Anyone acting as a Reinsurance Intermediary Broker in Massachusetts must be licensed.

Individual Reinsurance Intermediary Broker License
Resident Applicants
You must:
- Hold an active insurance producer license for the lines of insurance you intend to transact as a Reinsurance Intermediary Broker
- Have held that producer license for at least 3 years before applying
You must maintain your insurance producer license to keep your Reinsurance Intermediary Broker license.
Non-Resident Applicants
You must have held the lines of authority you are applying for under the Reinsurance Intermediary Broker license for at least 3 years on your resident producer license. Your license must be verifiable through the Producer Database (PDB).

Business Entity Reinsurance Intermediary Broker License
Businesses that act as intermediaries between insurers and reinsurers must hold a Business Entity Reinsurance Intermediary Broker License. Before applying, the business entity must complete the Massachusetts Business Entity licensing process. Learn about Business Entity Licensing Requirements
License-Specific Requirements
- Each affiliated member acting as a Reinsurance Intermediary Broker must be individually qualified as a Reinsurance Intermediary Broker.
- Affiliated members must maintain the insurance producer licenses required for the lines of insurance they transact as Reinsurance Intermediary Brokers.
