History of outreach
Prior to the implementation of the pilot, MassDOT developed and distributed various informational materials to inform target audiences of the roadway changes. Outreach initiatives were intended to reach residents and regional travelers. Informational materials included:
- Abutter letter
- Abutter flyer
- Regional flyer
- Frequently Asked Questions Page
- Fact sheet
- Social media tiles
Materials were shared via direct mail, distributed to local Town Halls, libraries, and select businesses, emailed to legislators, posted on social media, and shared on the project website.
Public engagement and communication opportunities
MassDOT prioritized ongoing communication with the Town of Milton, local stakeholders, residents, and travelers along the corridor. An email address was created specifically for the Route 28 Road Diet Pilot Project and maintained directly by the project team. All feedback was reviewed and used to inform understanding of the pilot’s impact. The project team also answered questions and addressed concerns shared by community members.
The project team publicly presented at various town meetings on the pilot, sharing information, receiving feedback, and answering questions. Meetings the project team joined include:
- Select Board – August 20, 2025
- Listening Session hosted by local legislators: December 8, 2025
- Select Board – May 26, 2026
Local communication and coordination
MassDOT reached out to local stakeholders such as the Brockton Transit Authority and Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. Meetings were regularly held with the Town of Milton staff and communication remained open and ongoing throughout the duration of the pilot.
