Overview
The purpose of the Sex Offender Registration Notification Act (SORNA) is to improve public safety through the creation of a comprehensive national system of standards for the registration and notification of convicted sex offenders.
If a state has not made substantial progress toward complying with SORNA, the US Department of Justice reallocates 10% of federal funding awarded to that state through the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) to be used for purposes aligned with SORNA. As the State Administering Agency (SAA) for JAG funding awarded to Massachusetts, OGR also manages the SORNA reallocation.
