Description
Spectacle Pond is a 108-acre great pond with an average depth of 16 feet and a maximum depth of 42 feet. The pond gets its names from its shape, which is really two attached kettlehole ponds separated by a shallow sandbar and island. Transparency is excellent, extending to 22 feet. Submergent aquatic vegetation is common. The shoreline is wooded and lightly developed with houses and two summer camps. The bottom is composed of sand and rubble, with some areas of gravel. Except during the highest groundwater level, the pond is surrounded by a wide sand and gravel margin.
Recreational access
The town of Sandwich manages a gravel launch suitable for cartop and light trailered craft located at the end of a dirt access road off of Pinkham Rd on the southwest shore (get directions). Motors are restricted to 15-horsepower or less for all boats. Parking is available for approximately five cars and shore access is limited to areas adjacent to the launch. Please contact the offices of the town of Sandwich for additional information, fee structure and/or additional restrictions pertaining to public access of Spectacle Pond.

Fishing
Spectacle Pond is a popular trout fishing destination throughout the year. The northern basin stratifies during the summer months and trout water is found between 32 and 34 feet in depth. Stocked trout will occasionally holdover in this deeper basin. The wide shorelines makes for easy fly fishing and a fly fishing school is held on the shores of the pond in May. Spectacle Pond has produced largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, brown bullhead, sunfish, rainbow trout, and tiger trout that meet minimum sizes for recognition by the Freshwater Sportfishing Awards Program.
