Description
Sudbury Reservoir is a 1,240-acre impoundment of the Sudbury River located in Southborough and Marlborough. It serves as the backup water supply for Boston and 50 other cities and towns. Sudbury Reservoir has an average depth of 12 feet, a maximum depth of 60 feet, and infrequent aquatic vegetation. The entire shoreline lies within Water Supply Protection land and is undeveloped.
Recreational access
Sudbury Reservoir is managed by the by Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Division of Water Supply Protection. No boats are allowed on the reservoir, and shore access is permitted through gates situated around the reservoir. Shore access with parking can be found at:
- Acre Bridge Road at the athletic fields (get directions)
- Parmenter Road at the Bay Circuit Trail Head (get directions)
- Corner of Nichols and Clemmons St. (get directions)
- Route 30 (get directions)
- Route 85 (get directions)
The Sudbury Reservoir is closed seasonally, and users must comply with additional restrictions intended to protect water quality. Fish populations
The following fish species were found during MassWildlife surveys:
- largemouth bass
- smallmouth bass
- chain pickerel
- yellow perch
- white perch
- black crappie
- bluegill
- pumpkinseed
- red breasted sunfish
- yellow bullhead
Fishing
Sudbury Reservoir has produced largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, black crappie, yellow perch, white perch, and sunfish that meet minimum sizes for recognition by the Sportfishing Awards Program.
