Stage 1: Apply to the appropriate VR agency
Once you decide that you want to apply, you either go through the Blindness Registry at MCB or MassAbility Connect (see How to apply for VR). After submitting your application along with all required documentation, the agency reviews your information to determine whether you are eligible for VR services.
Stage 2: Meet Your VR counselor
If you meet the eligibility criteria, you are assigned to a VR counselor at your local office. The VR counselor is the main point of contact going forward throughout the VR process. You will talk with the VR counselor about why you applied to VR and what you are hoping to receive.
Stage 3: Create an Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE)
You and your VR counselor work together to decide on an employment goal you will work toward and receive services to achieve. This goal is documented in your Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE).
Stage 4: Receive VR services
Once your IPE is signed, you start receiving VR services. Some are provided directly by the VR agency, while others are provided by third-party vendors by referral. Regardless of who provides the service, each service is documented in your IPE.
You and your VR counselor continue to work together to make progress toward your employment goal.
Stage 5: Case closure
When you reach your employment goal and have your job for at least 90 days, your VR case is closed successfully.
If it is determined that you are not able to make progress toward your employment goal, your case may be closed without achieving an employment outcome. The VR agency must explain this decision and inform you of your rights.
