Early action activities are underway near and on the Westford and Gorham Street bridges in preparation of Phase 1 detours. This work includes test pits for exploration, tree trimming and removal, utility relocation work, and erosion control measure implementation at both the Westford Street and Gorham Street Bridges. A temporary traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Carlisle Street, Boston Road and Manning Road in anticipation of the Gorham Street detour.

Work hours for these activities will be weekdays from 7 AM to 3 PM, and will require occasional lane closures. There will also be overnight work on I-495, which will require lane closures at each bridge location. Police details will be present to facilitate this work.

Weather and unexpected circumstances make all construction activities subject to change without notice, but we will do our best to keep you updated.

Phase I Construction Begins June 2025

Phase I bridge detours will begin following the conclusion of the 2024-2025 school year in late June 2025. The bridge detours will be implemented as follows:

  • Gorham Street Bridge: Full Phase I closure to be implemented Monday, July 7, 2025.
  • Westford Street Bridge: Bridge closure to be implemented 24-hours a day from Thursday, June 26 – Thursday, July 3, 2025. The bridge will reopen on Friday, July 4 through Sunday, July 6. Following this reopening, the Full Phase I closure will be implemented on Monday, July 7.

During Phase I, each bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic for 12 – 18 months. Pedestrian access will be maintained across each bridge during these closures. During the Phase I closures, bicycle access will be maintained on the Westford Street Bridge and detoured on the Gorham Street Bridge. A local detour route will be implemented at each bridge (see maps of detour routes). When Phase I is completed, the bridges will reopen to all traffic.
