Needham Street Bus Stop Modifications Began Monday, July 13

MassDOT’s contractor, P. Gioioso & Sons, has begun curb and sidewalk work related to the reconstruction of MBTA Route 59 bus stops on Needham Street in Newton. This work began on Monday, July 13 and will continue weekdays through Fall 2026.

Lane shifts on Needham Street will be necessary to facilitate construction. Appropriate signage will be in place to direct traffic during these impacts, and pedestrian and bicycle access will be maintained.

This reconstruction is necessary to update constrained bus stops along the corridor, eliminating unsafe conditions where bike lanes and bus boarding zones are shared. Some of these reconstructed bus stops will increase the amount of space within the shared bike lane and boarding zones, while some will be turned into a "floating" bus stop, with the bike lane passing between the bus stop and the sidewalk.
