Project updates

As of May 2025, all major roadway, sidewalk reconstruction, and bridge work on the project is complete, except for sections of sidewalk, ADA ramps, curbing, and bike lanes that are currently occupied by utility poles, which are scheduled to be removed.

In Spring/Summer of 2025 the contractor is scheduled to complete all roadway striping, which includes legends, arrows, and bike lane painting.

Intersection improvements have been made at the two intersections at Winchester Street and Centre Street below the Route 9 Bridge. The contractor is expected to implement the associated Adaptive Signal Control technology throughout the project corridor.

Coordination is ongoing with various utility companies located in the corridor to ensure important utility work continues. For this reason, the bike lanes will remain closed on Needham Street, Newton until utility wires are relocated and the old poles are removed.

Upon removal of the old utility poles, the contractor will return to Needham Street to finish installation of sidewalk panels, ADA ramps, curbing, and permanent pavement patching to get these areas to a finished condition. At this time Needham Street and the project is expected to be completed late fall of 2025.
