Uniform Protocol for Limited Assistance Representation Training in the Massachusetts Trial Court

Requirements to become a certified Limited Assistance Representation (LAR) attorney.

The requirements of this Uniform Protocol for Limited Assistance Representation Training shall apply to the following court departments: 

  • Boston Municipal Court
  • District Court
  • Housing Court
  • Land Court
  • Probate and Family Court
  • Superior Court

To become a certified Limited Assistance Representation Attorney, a licensed Massachusetts attorney must complete the following:

  1. Self-Training 

Attorneys must read the Limited Assistance Training Manual, available on the Trial Court website. Attorneys may also, if they wish, view videos of in person training programs that are available on the Mass Pro Bono website

OR 

  1. In Person Training 

Attorneys must attend an in person training program through one of the following organizations: 

  • MCLE: Building Your Practice with Limited Assistance Representation
  • Boston Bar Association
  • Massachusetts Bar Association
  • Volunteer Lawyers’ Project
  • Real Estate Bar Association

All approved in person training programs must use the Trial Court Limited Assistance Representation Training Manual, and must include a review of the ethical aspects of using Limited Assistance Representation in a lawyer’s practice.
