Facilities at State Police Devens Barracks
Devens was decommissioned as an active Army Base as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure Act of 1991. In 1993, the Massachusetts State Legislature designated Mass Development as the local authority, responsible for economic development and the provision of municipal services, including policing. The Devens Barracks was organized under a community policing philosophy and therefore offers a range of services that are designed not only to improve public safety, but to improve the community as it grows. At Devens, the State Police perform all of the duties of a local police department. The Devens Barracks provides police coverage 24 hours a day, including the functions of constant patrol, rapid response and thorough investigation. The Devens Barracks has primary responsibility for the 90 miles of roadways on Devens property.
