Framingham — On Monday of this week, Secretary Terrence Reidy and leaders from across the Public Safety and Security Secretariat welcomed the 2023 summer internship cohort as part of a day-long orientation program. Developed by the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS) in 2022, the paid internship program promotes accessible, equitable pathways to a career in safety and security and was designed to provide aspiring public safety professionals with real-world experience in public service.
“We established our internship program to inspire a new generation of leaders committed to public service in Massachusetts. I began my career in 1996 as an intern at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. My internship was personally and professionally transformative and set my career on a path that led to my current role.” said Public Safety and Security Secretary Terrence Reidy. “My goal is to provide EOPSS interns with a meaningful learning opportunity that offers a deeper understanding of the complexities and rewards of our work in public safety.”
For the next 12 weeks, a diverse group of more than 50 students will be fully immersed in 17 different teams and agencies across the Secretariat. The interns will receive professional exposure to a wide array of policy matters such as legal, fiscal, IT, human resources, and communications. Furthermore, this program provides the EOPSS team with a meaningful opportunity to demonstrate the demands and rewards of choosing a career in public service dedicated to the protection and safety of others.
More than 250 applicants applied for this competitive program. Representing 33 colleges and universities, the cohort of 56 interns comprises 64% women and 57% people of color. The group began the week at the Massachusetts State Police Homeland Security Operations Center in Framingham for orientation. The interns received a general overview of EOPSS, including the roles and responsibilities of the 12 agencies.
