The Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS) offers an exciting paid internship opportunity for students enrolled in higher education. This in-person program within EOPSS agencies provides students from diverse backgrounds with valuable real-world experience in public service. The program is designed to provide students with professional exposure to a variety of public safety-related agencies across the Secretariat.

The Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS) is a Secretariat within the executive branch responsible for the policy development and budgetary oversight of its agencies, independent programs, and several boards which aid in crime prevention, homeland security preparedness, and ensuring the safety of residents and visitors in the Commonwealth.
The Massachusetts State Police (MSP) serves as the statewide law enforcement agency and maintains investigative, tactical, and support units throughout the Commonwealth. As the principle statewide law enforcement agency in the Commonwealth, the Massachusetts State Police, in partnership with local communities, provides public safety by delivering quality policing directed at achieving safer roadways, reducing crime through investigations, education, and patrol services.
The Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory (MSPCL) provides forensic services for the criminal justice system, including responding to crime scenes, performing laboratory testing, and providing expert testimony.
The Office of Grants and Research (OGR) oversees the distribution and administration of grants and conducts research related to criminal justice, anti-drug and violence prevention education, law enforcement, and traffic safety. The office is divided into four divisions:
Justice and Prevention,
Highway Safety,
Homeland Security, and
Research and Policy Analysis, which maintains the Massachusetts Statistical Analysis Center
The Massachusetts Parole Board is an agency within the Executive Office of Public Safety & Security authorized to grant paroles, supervise parolees in the community and make recommendations to the Governor regarding pardons and commutations.
The Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) is responsible for the development, delivery, and enforcement of training standards for municipal, MBTA, environmental, UMass, campus police officers, and deputy sheriffs performing police duties and function.
The mission of the Sex Offender Registry Board (SORB) is to promote public safety through educating and informing the public in order to prevent further victimization. This is accomplished through registering and classifying convicted sex offenders by risk of re-offense and degree of danger and disseminating the identifying information of those offenders who live, work and/or attend institutions of higher learning in the communities of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) ensures the state is prepared to withstand, respond to, and recover from all types of emergencies and disasters.
The Department of Criminal Justice Information Services (DCJIS) manages and administers the Commonwealth’s law enforcement information and criminal records systems, the Firearms Records Bureau, and the post-conviction victim notification program.
The mission of the Department of Fire Services (DFS) is to provide the people of Massachusetts with the ability to create safer communities and support the fire service community in the protection of life and property, to promote and enhance firefighter safety, and leadership presence in the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security. This is accomplished through coordinated training, education, prevention, investigation, advocacy, and emergency response.
The Massachusetts National Guard is an operational reserve of the United States Army and Air Force that provides ready, relevant, and reliable troops and equipment to respond to natural disasters or other civil emergencies when activated by the Governor. The Guard also supports the federal military mission when activated to duty by the President of the United States.
The Department of Correction (DOC) promotes public safety by overseeing the state prison system, and managing inmates at 15 institution across the state.
