Ilyse Wolberg, DCR Deputy Communications Director
MONTEREY — After more than four years, the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) today announced the reopening of the Beartown State Forest campground, featuring more than $350,000 improvements, including modern bathroom facilities and enhanced amenities.
“Camping is a time-honored summer tradition for so many families across the state, including my own,” said DCR Commissioner Brian Arrigo. “The upgrades we’ve made at Beartown reflect our commitment to providing fun and safe recreational experiences for residents and visitors to DCR parks and properties. We’re excited to welcome campers back to this wonderful area.”
During its closure the campground underwent significant upgrades, including the installation of two brand new bathrooms equipped with running water and flush toilets, several new water spigots throughout the site, and updated tables and grills. Internet connectivity has also been established at the contact station to better assist campers. Additionally, DCR created a new year-round staff position to ensure improved visitor service.
Beartown’s campground has 12 sites for tent camping. Campers can explore the 12,000-acre state forest that stretches through the towns of Great Barrington, Monterey, Lee, Tyringham and Stockbridge or take a self-guided hike along the 1.5 mile Benedict Pond loop. They can also fish or swim in Benedict Pond, a shallow 35-acre man made pond.
