The Board of Registration in Medicine’s (“Board”) Committee on Acupuncture (“COA”) encourages interested acupuncture practitioners licensed in the Commonwealth to apply for appointment to a renewable three-year term as a volunteer COA member.  The COA was established in 1987, pursuant to M.G.L.c.112 § 149, and works to regulate the safe practice of acupuncture in Massachusetts.  The COA convenes at least four times annually to discuss and act on licensing, disciplinary and policy matters concerning acupuncture licensees and the practice of acupuncture.  The COA is currently seeking to fill two vacant Committee member positions which are open to one licensed acupuncturist and one member of the general public who is not engaged in or does not have a financial interest in the delivery of health services.

Application Process

COA members are appointed by the Board pursuant to the COA Member Appointment Process, Policy 15-01, adopted by the Board on January 22, 2015.  Pursuant to this policy, an interested candidate is required to provide the following documentation:

  • a written recommendation from a professional acupuncture organization or an institution engaged in teaching acupuncture;
  • a completed application;
  • a curriculum vitae;
  • any additional documents requested by the preliminary screening committee; and
  • for the public member applicant only, a letter indicating that he/she is not engaged in or does not have a financial interest in the delivery of health services.

Candidates may be subject to an interview by a preliminary screening committee established by the Board. Recommended candidates will be subject to a criminal background check conducted by the Acting Director of Licensing or her designee.

Nominations, with supporting documents, may be sent by December 30, 2018, to the attention of Carol A.M. Purmort, Acting Director of Licensing, 200 Harvard Mill Square, Suite 330, Wakefield, Massachusetts 01880.
