Cambridge — The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) today broke ground on a more than $2.2 million public-private investment that will improve and restore a section of Magazine Beach. The project, a partnership with the City of Cambridge and the Magazine Beach Partners, will improve access to the Charles River waterfront and provide the community with new opportunities for active and passive recreation along the river.

“Magazine Beach is a treasured urban oasis for the community that serves as a natural showcase of the Charles River,” said DCR Commissioner Nicole LaChapelle. “We’re excited to partner with the City of Cambridge and the Magazine Beach Partners on this long-awaited project that will revitalize this important park, bringing families and residents closer to the riverfront and providing them with a safe and welcoming space to connect, recharge and enjoy for years to come.”

This latest phase is part of an ongoing effort to update the existing infrastructure at the park and make improvements to the site. This project was funded by the City of Cambridge with additional contributions from the Magazine Beach Partners and DCR that will increase connectivity and access to the River throughout Magazine Beach. The current phase of improvements include:

  • installation of a new dock and observation deck
  • restoration of the shoreline with native vegetation
  • the regrading and establishment of a grassy lawn area
  • accessible pedestrian pathways
  • benches, picnic tables and bike racks
  • universally accessible parking
  • native plantings

“I am thrilled to see these critical Magazine Beach renovations begin and I can’t wait to see all the new amenities that will beautify this space and expand access for neighbors of all ages and abilities in our community and beyond,” said State Senator Sal DiDomenico

"I am delighted that we are taking the next big step forward for the revitalization of Magazine Beach," said State Representative Mike Connolly. "Since Cambridgeport was added to the 26th Middlesex district some 4 years ago, I have been proud to work closely with Rep. Livingstone and others to continue these efforts to bring the state, the city, and local advocates together in support of this treasured natural resource.

“I am honored to have played a role in the improvements at Magazine Beach throughout my tenure as State Representative for this park,” said State Representative Jay Livingstone. “Although I no longer represent this area, I have always valued staying connected to these efforts, and today’s groundbreaking is no exception. Today marks an important milestone as the next phase of construction begins. I am grateful to DCR, the City of Cambridge, and Magazine Beach Partners for their steadfast commitment to making this vision a reality.”

Construction began on Monday, August 25, 2025. Work on the docks, lawn regrading, and hardscapes is expected to be completed this winter, with planting and landscaping taking place next spring and summer.

“We are excited for the next phase of improvements to begin at Magazine Beach, one of the City’s historic gems that has long been cherished by our community,” said Cambridge City Manager Yi-An Huang. “These investments will build on the park’s strengths and enhance it as a welcoming space for all who live in and visit Cambridge.”

“Today’s groundbreaking is the latest manifestation of 15 years of support from our community, the City of Cambridge, and DCR,” said Decia Goodwin, Magazine Beach Partners President. “To our partners and park advocates, your cooperation and ongoing involvement in polishing this riverside gem is deeply appreciated. Thank you all!”

“The planned restoration project will continue to positively transform this vibrant community hub that allows community members to immerse themselves in the outdoors, learn about their local environment, and take part in uplifting classes and programs,” said Erin Kelly, Sanctuary Director, Boston Nature Center and Magazine Beach Park Nature Center, Mass Audubon. “DCR's planned shoreline restoration work and new dock perfectly align with our Nature in the City programs that help connect visitors directly with nature and the Charles River native ecosystem.”

“Riverside Boat Club is very pleased that the Magazine Beach Phase 2.2 project is underway,” said Karen Chenausky, President Riverside Boat Club. “This will improve not only the aesthetics, but the flow of the park. With Mass. Audubon center, the pool, exercise area, playing fields, and new viewing decks, we believe this project will make Magazine Beach a favorite park destination spot.”
