HOLYOKE — The investigation into this month’s intentionally set fire on Pine Street has led to two arrests for the incident and additional charges for contraband recovered during the execution of a warrant, said Holyoke Police Chief Brian Keenan, Holyoke Fire Chief John Kadlewicz, and State Fire Marshal Jon Davine.
Holyoke and State Police yesterday charged ANTHONY ORTIZ CORREA, 40, and NAYSHA MERCED GONZALEZ, 42, with burning a dwelling, attempted murder, and causing injury to a firefighter in the line of duty for allegedly setting the November 4 fire at 268 Pine Street. Both were additionally charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, trafficking in a Class B substance, and related offenses for a handgun and cocaine recovered in the course of their arrest.
The investigation by Holyoke Police, the Holyoke Fire Department, and State Police fire investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office determined that the early morning fire had been intentionally set. High winds contributed to rapid fire spread through all three floors of the structure. Six residents were displaced and one firefighter suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
The continued investigation led to the identification of both suspects and supported a warrant for their arrests, which was executed yesterday in partnership with local, state, and federal agencies. They are likely to be arraigned in Holyoke District Court today.
