The risk of falling victim to package theft has increased as online shopping becomes more popular. This scam is commonly known as “porch piracy.” In 2023, porch pirates cost consumers and businesses an estimated $9 billion by looting more than 115 million packages. Data from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and Security.org show that for the “Worst States for Porch Pirates,” Massachusetts ranks number 13. So, as Massachusetts residents, it's vital to take proactive measures to protect package deliveries.
“The best defense against scams is knowledge,” said Layla R. D’Emilia, Undersecretary of the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Development (OCABR). “Our goal is to educate consumers on how to protect themselves from crimes like porch piracy, and what to do if you are targeted.”
Understanding the Problem
Porch piracy is the act of stealing packages left outside homes. These thieves, or “porch pirates,” take advantage of unattended packages, especially during the holiday season when deliveries surge. The increase in package theft has become a national issue, prompting homeowners to find better ways to secure their online purchases.
ADT notes, “A staggering 43% of Americans have fallen victim to package theft.” They also highlight that “most package thefts occur during the day, typically between 1 PM and 4 PM, when residents are at work or school.”
Tips to Protect Your Deliveries
While a stolen package is a possibility for any homeowner, there are several preventative and security measures you can take:
- Track Your Packages: Take advantage of tracking features to know when your package will arrive.
- Install Security Cameras: Visible security cameras can deter thieves from targeting your home.
- Use a Secure Delivery Location: If possible, have packages delivered to the store you ordered from, a neighbor’s house, or a secure locker.
- Require a Signature: Request a signature for deliveries so packages are not left unattended.
- Invest in a Porch Pirate Bag: These bags can be secured on your porch. Delivery drivers place packages inside to keep them safe from thieves.
What to Do if Your Package Is Stolen
Unfortunately, no solution is foolproof. If you think your package has been stolen, it is important to act quickly. “If a porch pirate pilfers a package shipped by the likes of Amazon, FedEx and UPS, reaching out to the retailer—not the shipper—might be your best bet for scoring a replacement or refund,” noted Forbes.
It's also advisable to file a police report, which can help local authorities track crime patterns in your area. Additionally, some credit card companies provide purchase protection and could reimburse you. Check with your provider to see if you’re eligible for coverage.
