STOW — The State Fire Marshal recently issued an advisory and summary of revisions to 527 CMR 1.00, the Massachusetts Comprehensive Fire Safety Code, promulgated by the Board of Fire Prevention Regulations. The code is largely based upon the 2015 Edition of NFPA-1. These amendments supplement the current code, bridging the gap between the current 2015 NFPA 1 base code and the recently published 2018 NFPA 1 edition. The amendments revise some items for clarity and adopt new chapters from the 2018 edition of NFPA 1. The revisions will go into effect on October 18, 2019.
The major changes address these issues:
- Authority Having Jurisdiction
- Fire Department Vehicle Access Roads
- Cannabis Growing, Processing, and Extraction
- Tank Vehicle Inspections
- On-Demand Mobile Vehicle Fueling
- Energy Storage Systems
The Massachusetts Firefighting Academy will host training on the amendment package that will familiarize fire prevention officers with these code changes, their implications, and application in local communities.Training times and locations will be posted soon on the DFS Learning Management System (LMS). The plan for this training will begin with offerings in Stow, Springfield and at the November meeting of the Fire Prevention Association of Massachusetts. Additional classes will be scheduled throughout the Commonwealth this fall and winter.
Fire prevention officers should contact the Department of Fire Services’ Code Compliance and Enforcement Unit at (978) 567 -3375 with any questions on these regulations.
