Massachusetts Seal, Flag, and Motto Advisory Commission

Established by the Legislature in 2024, the Massachusetts Seal, Flag, and Motto Advisory Commission is tasked with developing and recommending new symbols to represent the state through a statewide public process.

Join the Effort to Redefine Our State Symbols

The Massachusetts Seal, Flag, and Motto Advisory Commission has launched an open call to artists, historians, educators, students, and members of the public to participate in the effort to redesign the state’s seal, flag, and motto. We encourage you to submit your ideas for these new state emblems by June 18, 2025!

The Massachusetts Seal, Flag, and Motto Advisory Commission was established by Chapter 140 of the Acts of 2024 to make recommendations for the adoption of a new design for the seal of the Commonwealth; a new design for the flag of the Commonwealth; and a new motto of the Commonwealth

To identify options for a new seal, flag and motto of the Commonwealth, the Advisory Commission has launched a public process to solicit ideas from the general public and will issue a public request for proposals for a professional designer to assist with the final design of the state emblems.

The Advisory Commission will select three final options for a new seal, flag and motto and hold public hearings across the state to solicit public input in the process. Following the selection of a final design for a new seal, flag, and motto, the Advisory Commission will submit its final recommendations to the Governor.
