Policy Regarding Continuing Competence for Reinstatement of Expired Licenses
Purpose:
The purpose of this policy statement is to offer guidance to licensees regarding what is “evidence satisfactory to the Board of having completed [any or all] required continuing education credits” for license reinstatement. 259 CMR §2.05.
Policy:
- A licensee whose license has been expired for less than 90 days may renew and attest to completing the required continuing competence for the past licensing cycle.
- A licensee whose license has been expired for more than 90 days but less than two years must submit proof of 24 continuing competence points completed anytime from two years before the licensee’s license expired to the present.
- A licensee whose license has been expired for more than two years but less than four years must submit proof of 48 continuing competence points completed anytime from two years before the licensee’s license expired to the present.
- A licensee whose license has been expired for more than four years but less than six years must submit proof of 72 continuing competence points completed anytime from two years before the licensee’s license expired to the present.
- A licensee whose license has been expired for more than six years may be required to retake the application licensure examination.
All continuing competence submissions for all license types must include two points in ethics, laws, and/or regulations governing practice in Massachusetts for each 24 points submitted. Athletic trainers should submit continuing competence approved by the Board of Certification (BOC) or an official verification of certification from the BOC showing certification during the entire period the applicant’s Massachusetts license was expired.
A Licensee who have been licensed in another state for the entire period that the licensee’s Massachusetts license has been expired may attest that the licensee was required to complete continuing competence to maintain that license and is not required to submit proof of continuing competence or to take an examination to reinstate.
