About the Route 138 Roadway Improvements Project - Canton to Milton

Roadway improvements to a nine mile stretch of Route 138 to improve safety and mobility for all users.

Route 138 is a regional arterial serving Boston, Milton, Canton and Stoughton and carries a high volume of traffic.

The nine miles from Mattapan/Milton to the Canton/Stoughton town line provide access to:

  • the Blue Hills Reservation recreational area

  • large business and industrial areas

  • residential areas of single and multi-family homes

Route 138 Priority Corridor Studies in 2017-18 identified inadequate bicycle and pedestrian access. The studies also identified traffic safety, congestion and mobility concerns.

This project is part of MassDOT’s Complete Streets and Healthy Transportation program.

Schedule and Process

MassDOT’s project team is currently in the preliminary design concept phase. Once the design is further advanced, we will develop a more complete timeline for the project.
