Benefits for active military, veterans, and military spouses (OLRH)

If you are an active military personnel, veteran, or military spouse, you may qualify for certain licensure benefits under the VALOR Act.

About the VALOR Act

According to the Veterans’ Access, Livelihood, Opportunity and Resources (VALOR) Act, the Office of Local and Regional Health will in relation to Registered Sanitarians and Certified Health Officers:

  • Accept relevant education, training, and service completed by a credentialing applicant as a member of the armed forces or the military reserves toward the qualifications required for credential. See General Law, Chapter 112, Section 1B(b).

  • Keep the credential of a member of the armed forces who is on active duty valid until released from active duty, and for 90 days thereafter. See General Law, Chapter 112, Section 1B(c).

  • Expedite the credentialing process for military spouses who are licensed in other states and have left employment there to accompany a spouse relocated to the Commonwealth due to a military transfer. See General Law, Chapter 112, Section 1B(d). Specifically, the Office of Local and Regional Health automatically renew credentials for active duty service members without requiring payment of the renewal fee or completion of continuing education. Please note, your acceptance of this benefit may result in the military deeming your license to be “restricted” even though it is not restricted under Massachusetts law. For more information, please review the attached correspondence:
