If your legal name or address changes, you will need to contact DOR in order to have your legal name or address updated.
Changing your legal name or address with the Social Security Administration, Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV), or any other agency does not automatically update your information with DOR.
To update your legal name with DOR, you can send proof of your legal name change to DOR through the mail or an e-message. Documents that establish proof of a legal name change include:
- A copy of your driver’s license
- Social Security card.
You can also report a new address to DOR on your personal income tax return. If your address changes after you file your return, you can update the new address by mail or e-message.
When you request a change of address, no proof or documentation is necessary.
Sending an e-message in MassTaxConnect is fast and secure. You can also attach additional documentation (e.g., proof of a legal name change) and receive confirmation once the change is completed.
If you do not have a MassTaxConnect account, you will need to select “Register a new taxpayer” on the MassTaxConnect homepage before you can send DOR an e-message.

Make changes to your address information and DBA name electronically with MassTaxConnect.
For legal name changes, you will need to send a MassTaxConnect e-message with attached documentation supporting the update.
