Qualifying for a MA hunting license

Answer the questions below to see if you qualify to obtain a hunting or sporting license in Massachusetts.

Are you a graduate of a Basic Hunter Education course?

If the answer is YES, you qualify for a Massachusetts hunting license. *Proof or certificate is not required (see below). To purchase your hunting or sporting license, use the MassFishHunt online licensing system or visit a license vendor location.

Did you have a hunting license in any US state, Canada, or Mexico prior to 2007?

If the answer is YES, you qualify for a Massachusetts hunting license. *Proof or copy of license is not required (see below). To purchase your hunting or sporting license, use the MassFishHunt online licensing system or visit a license vendor location.

If the answer is NO to BOTH questions above, you must successfully complete a Basic Hunter Education course.

Find a free MassWildlife Basic Hunter Education course. After successful completion of this course, purchase your hunting or sporting license either by using the MassFishHunt online licensing system or visit a license vendor location.

*Proof is not required.

If purchasing your license online, you will be prompted to use an electronic affidavit (check a box) to affirm one of the following:

  • I have held a hunting or sporting license prior to January 1, 2007.
  • I have successfully completed a Basic Hunter Education course.

If purchasing a license from a vendor or from a MassWildlife office, you will be asked to verbally state (verbal affidavit) whether you have held a hunting or sporting license prior to 2007 or if you have ever successfully completed a Basic Hunter Education course.

This affidavit is a declaration, under the pains and penalties of perjury, of eligibility to hold a hunting or sporting license. You do not need to show proof.
