June 7–8, 2025 is Free Freshwater Fishing Weekend
During this time, no freshwater fishing license is required to fish in the many beautiful lakes, ponds, streams, rivers in Massachusetts. It's easy to learn to fish. All you need to get started is some simple gear and a little practice.
To find a spot near you, click on the link above to see MassWildlife's map of great fishing locations. When you arrive at the waterbody, choose an open spot without overhanging trees or too much submerged vegetation.
If you’re a first-time angler, you don’t need tons of fancy equipment. Pick up a simple, push-button spin casting setup and some hooks and bobbers. You'll also need bait. Try garden worms, mealworms, or even small dense pieces of cheese or chicken.

With the exception of the Free Fishing Weekend, a fishing license is required for anyone over 15.
