Advisory  DCR Traffic Advisory: Chickatawbut Road and Wampatuck Road

What: Beginning Friday, August 7, 2026, the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will begin a pilot program to close portions of Chickatawbut Road and Wampatuck Road in Blue Hills Reservation to vehicle traffic on weekends through Sunday, September 6, 2026. This pilot program is centered around supporting conservation efforts in the Blue Hills Reservation and public safety including preventing dangerous drag racing and unauthorized nighttime use. Chickatawbut Road will be closed between Purgatory Road and the Chickatawbut Overlook. Wampatuck Road will be closed between Chickatawbut Road and Bunker Hill Lane. Gates will be in place marking the closed areas. Closures will begin each Friday at 5 p.m. and continue until each Sunday at 6 p.m. Each roadway will remain accessible to hikers, walkers, cyclists and emergency vehicles throughout the closure period. Traffic patterns will be clearly marked. 

DCR will be collecting data throughout the pilot closure, including traffic counts in the immediate area, to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of the closure. DCR held a public meeting regarding the pilot program on Wednesday, July 15, 2026. The public comment period will be open throughout the pilot closure. Comments can be submitted using the public meeting webpage.
