Advisory  MPTC Statement on the status of reserve academies

Date: 01/13/2021
Organization: Municipal Police Training Committee
Referenced Sources: Basic Reserve Police Academy

On December 31, 2020, Chapter 253 of the Acts of 2020 was signed into law.  Section 102(b) reads, “[a]ll law enforcement officers who have completed a reserve training program on or before the effective date of this section shall be certified as of the effective date of this section. Prior to the expiration of that certification, the officer shall complete additional training as required by the municipal police training committee.”  The effective date of section 102 is July 1, 2021.

The MPTC will not authorize any new classes to begin until further notice.  We are diligently reviewing the new law and gaining a better understanding of its requirements as they relate to our agency and the various law enforcement agencies we serve.  While we understand that there are questions about the status of reserve officers in the Commonwealth and the impact this law will have on numerous agencies throughout the Commonwealth, we ask for your patience at this time as we develop a plan to move forward.  We will provide updates as we have them.
