DPU Oversight of the MBTA

The DPU's Rail Transit Safety Division is responsible for overseeing the safety of equipment and operations for the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA).

Overview

DPU is responsible for overseeing the safety of equipment and operations for the Rail Fixed Guideway Public Transportation Systems (RFGPTS) in the state. MBTA is the only Massachusetts transit authority which operates a RFGPTS (Red, Green, Orange, and Blue Lines and Mattapan Trolley). DPU does not oversee safety of the Commuter Rail. DPU conducts random inspections of the MBTA to enhance safety and oversight. The Federal Railroad Administration is responsible for Commuter Rail safety.
