All applicants must be at least 16 years old to be considered for employment
- Lifeguard candidates for swimming pools should be able to swim 500 yards (20 lengths) in under 11 minutes.
- Lifeguard candidates for Designated Swimming Areas (beaches) should be able to swim 500 yards (20 lengths) in under 9 minutes, 30 seconds.
- Lifeguard candidates for ocean beaches will be required to complete a Run-Swim-Run.
- Lifeguard candidates under the age of 18 will need to present a valid work permit issued by their local school department.
- State law requires lifeguards working at DCR facilities to undergo annual CPR/AED training. Lifeguard candidates who were certified in CPR/AED prior to 9/2/2024 will need to take a CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Review course.

Register for Training
Each Fall through Spring DCR makes training programs available to applicants who agree to work for DCR in the upcoming summer. Training programs are limited in number so interested applicants are encouraged to apply now and enroll early in training programs.
Next Steps
Once we review your application, we will contact you via email with a link you can use to schedule a telephone screening to speak with us about open positions, your swimming ability (lifeguard/instructor positions), upcoming classes (including Lifeguarding, CPR and Pool Operator courses), as well as your summer availability including any planned vacations. Supervisor screenings will be conducted via Teams.
All scheduling will be done online after your application has been reviewed. Please come to your screening prepared to discuss your summer availability and any scheduling concerns, such as planned summer vacations, summer classes, etc.
Please note, we need to speak directly with the applicant. Separate parent information sessions may be scheduled.
