The Details

What you need

An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, and is used to identify a business entity. The only kind of business that does not require getting an EIN is a sole proprietorship with no employees.

You can only receive your EIN through the IRS. If you have questions about getting an EIN, contact the IRS.

Once you’ve received your EIN from the IRS, you can register your business with MassTaxConnect.

How to apply

To apply online, please visit the IRS website.

The Form SS-4 (see instructions) can be mailed or faxed to the IRS.
