Apply for a Nuclear Power Plant Operating Engineer License
The Nuclear Plant Operating Engineer License is for people who control a nuclear reactor which produces steam for generation of electrical power and in operation of auxiliary equipment.
Professional Requirements:
- Must complete an application listing prior experience; skills can be determined through practical exam:
- Must have 1 1/2 years employment under a Second Class engineer's License or an Assistant Nuclear Power Plant Operator License, or must possess a B.S. degree in Engineering plus 1 year of experience in some capacity of steam plant operation.

The Nuclear Power Operator Assistant license is for people who assist in controlling a nuclear reactor which produces steam
Professional Requirements:
- Must complete an application listing prior experience; skills can be determined through practical exam:
- 1 year experience as a steam power plant as a fireman, water tender, control room assistant; or
- 1 year experience as a designated assistant to the engineer in charge. Must provide written endorsement of training/experience by a person holding a steam power or nuclear power plant engineer's license.
Apply for a Nuclear Power Plant Senior Supervising Engineer License
The Nuclear Power Plant Senior Supervising Engineer license is for people who supervise and coordinate the activities of workers engaged in operation and control of thermonuclear reactor, turbine generator, and auxiliary equipment at electric generation station. They oversee the activities and the training of workers in safety precautions, repair, and maintenance.
Professional Requirements:
- Must complete an application listing prior experience; skills can be determined through practical exam.
- 2 years experience under first class engineer's or nuclear power plant engineer's license.
Examinations
In order to become licensed to operate a nuclear power plant in Massachusetts you must pass the written and oral exam.
Once the completed application has been received you will be registered for the next exam date. If the application is received after the deadline for the next exam, you will be registered for the following exam.
Incomplete applications will be returned to you.
You may request special accommodations for exams. This request must be submitted with the application package.
