The Details of Renew your Massachusetts ID (Mass ID)
What you need for Renew your Massachusetts ID (Mass ID)
Due to the pandemic, the Massachusetts RMV has taken measures to reduce customer visits in our Service Centers. All Massachusetts driver’s licenses and ID cards that expire in March, April, and May have been extended until September 2020. Even though the card in your possession displays your expiration date that has passed or soon to pass, the RMV system has been updated to reflect the new expiration date.
In addition, the federal government announced a revised REAL ID compliance deadline of October 1, 2021. Because a REAL ID requires an in-person visit to an RMV Service Center, the RMV has suspended the issuance of REAL IDs until September 2020. If you are a AAA member, you can make a reservation to renew your ID card at a AAA location. Visit aaa.com/appointments to schedule your visit.
The RMV is only allowing renewals online. You have the choice of obtaining a Standard license or ID card online now or waiting until after September 2020 to renew and obtain a REAL ID. To obtain a Standard license/ID card, follow the steps below.
- You will need to provide information from your citizenship/lawful presence document. Review the enclosed checklist and have your document ready.
- Visit the RMV's Online Service Center and select your renewal transaction then follow the prompts to verify your identity and start your transaction.
- Choose Standard Massachusetts ID Card and follow the prompts to complete your transaction online.
Turning 21 soon? You may want to wait to renew until your birthday. See the 'Turning 21?' section below.
